Some men have prominent mammary glands, either because of weight gain or as a result of a genetic condition called gynecomastia. Male breast surgery is a safe and effective procedure that results in diminishing breast size and improving the appearance of the pectoral region.

What are the indications of the procedure?

If diet and muscle toning exercises have not been helpful and you are in good health, you can be a suitable candidate for male breast reduction surgery. It is important to understand the limitations of the method and to have a clear picture of how the chest region looks after the procedure.
Before you schedule an appointment with a plastic surgeon, you will want to be sure that your gynecomastia is not caused by another condition. Ask your family doctor to exclude any other conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, which can cause breast tissue hypertrophy. Remember that some lifestyle choices, such as the use of steroids or marijuana, can cause or contribute to breast enlargement. If your family doctor excludes any underlying medical cause for breast enlargement, surgery may be a suitable treatment.

First consultation

Before surgery, you will benefit from a consultation and an initial evaluation with Dr. Sinescu to determine if gynecomastia surgery is appropriate for you and to explain the details of the procedure.
We will discuss what you can expect from this surgery and we’ll review all the options. You will be given a detailed explanation of the procedure, steps to be followed before and after surgery, potential risks and complications, costs and payment methods. We will answer all your questions. We’ll ask for medical history, information on cigarette and alcohol consumption and a list of all the medicines you use, including the over the counter ones.

Surgical procedure

The procedure generally lasts 1-2 hours and can be performed either under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia and sedation. Dr. Sinescu and her staff are doing their best to ensure your comfort during hospitalization and to get a satisfactory final result.
If excess is mainly fat, we will only use liposuction. If the glandular tissue is hypertrophied, its excision is performed alone or combined with liposuction. The incision is periareolar and as short as possible, except in cases of severe gynecomastia, when it may be necessary to have longer incisions and wide excisions for complete treatment. Liposuction is achieved by incisions of up to 5 mm. After suture and dressing, an external compression vest is used to stabilize the results.

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery

Shower / bath – 2 days postoperatively
Return to work – 1-3 days postoperatively
Driving – about a week after surgery
Intense physical activity – 4-6 weeks postoperatively
Fading of scars – a few months to a year

Risks and complications of surgery

Any surgery has a degree of risk, and breast surgery is no exception. During the first consultation, Dr. Sinescu will evaluate your individual risk level, all potential problems will be discussed and we will establish together if you have a strong indication for gynecomastia surgery. Strict adherence to all pre- and postoperative medical recommendations is crucial to reducing any danger. We will always be at your side to achieve a satisfactory and safe end result.

The most common complications include:

– postoperative bleeding and hematoma
– infections
– skin or areola-nipple complex necrosis
– skin dehiscence
– modified local sensibility
– hypertrophic scarring
– asymmetry

How long do the results last?

The results of surgery are permanent. However, subsequent weight gain may affect the final appearance.
