Omphaloplasty

Although omphaloplasty is always part of abdominoplasty, there are patients who want a different aspect of the navel in the absence of any extensive abdominal surgery. Umbilical form is determined at birth but can change over time due to weight changes, pregnancy or umbilical hernia. Our doctors can easily offer you an aesthetic navel, whether we are talking about transforming a protruding navel into a flat one or creating a horizontal or T-shaped navel.

What are the indications for the umbilical revision?

If you have never been pleased with the shape and size of your navel, or you do not like changes caused by pregnancy, weight gain or umbilical hernias, you may be a good candidate for omphaloplasty. You will establish with our medical team if this relatively simple surgery is right for you.

First consultation

Dr. Sinescu and our medical staff are dedicated to helping get the body you want in a safe and proper way. Therefore, during your first appointment with our staff, before planning your surgery, we shall evaluated your navel and we shall discuss your goals and expectations. We’ll review the various options suitable for you. You will be given a detailed explanation of the procedure, steps to be followed before and after surgery, potential risks and complications, costs and payment methods. We will answer all your questions. We’ll ask for your medical history, information on cigarette and alcohol consumption, and a list of all the medicines you use, including the over the counter ones.

Surgical procedure

Omfaloplasty lasts for about an hour and is performed in local anesthesia, with or without sedation, according to your wishes. The doctor makes a small incision in the umbilical region and either removes excess skin or transfers a small skin flap from the abdomen to the navel, depending on the desired outcome.
Incisions are usually hidden in the folds of the navel and heal quickly and almost imperceptibly. The sutures used are either soluble or extracted within 7-10 days.

Recovery after the umbilical revision

Shower / bath – on the day of surgery
Return to work – one postoperative week
Normal activities – right away
Suture removal – 7-10 days postoperatively
Fading of scars – in a few months

To remember

An umbilical hernia can cause the navel distortion of the navel button. In this case, it will be repaired simultaneously with omphaloplasty.

What are the possible side effects or risks?

Risks associated with omphaloplasty are rare. During the initial consultation, our physicians will assess and discuss the individual risks and determine if you are a good candidate for intervention. You can help reduce risks by carefully following the pre- and post-operative instructions provided. Our staff will be with you every step of the way to ensure a safe and aesthetic result.

Specific potential risks include:

– asymmetry
– need for additional surgery
– pathological scarring

How long do the results last?

The umbilical revision will bring the desired shape and size. The results of surgery are permanent except in cases of significant weight gain or post-procedure pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

Are there other procedures that might be associated?
Most patients benefit from abdominoplasty combined with omphaloplasty. Liposuction can also be used to enhance the general appearance of the abdomen.

Does my health insurance cover the costs of the intervention?
Omphaloplasty is considered cosmetic surgery and is therefore not covered by insurance. You are responsible for the full payment of the procedure. During the first consultation, the cost and payment information will be detailed.
